What is Turmeric?

It is a perennial herbaceous plant from the ginger family. It's native to southern Asia and usually used in its dried powder form. Its chief use is in cooking and secondarily used as a dye. Its root contains a yellow-colored chemical called curcumin. Although its benefits have been known in Asia for centuries, recently it has taken on new acclaim in the West as a disease-preventing agent with over 6,000 articles and studies referencing its benefits. It is widely recognized for its anti-inflammatory properties and to treat heartburn, cholesterol disorders, depression, arthritis and even cancer.
